Kane’s parents divorced during her teenage years, and she grew up in New York City, but attended the Cherry Lawn School in Darien, Connecticut before the Professional Children’s School in New York City, where she also studied drama at HB Studio.

Her acting career began in theater during mid-’60s, appearing in a production of “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie”. She made her film debut with a small role in the 1971 drama “Desperate Characters”, after which she landed a number of film parts, such as in “The Last Detail”, “Dog Day Afternoon” and “The World’s Greatest Lover”; her wealth began to grow. Her most notable role of the time was that of Gitl in the 1975 romantic film “Hester Street”, which earned Kane her first taste of fame, and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress. Another significant part followed in the 1977 romantic comedy “Annie Hall”, in which she played the character of Allison Portchnik. Paving her way to Hollywood stardom, her net worth constantly grew.

In the meantime, she also made several TV appearances. However, her first major television role came in 1980, when she joined the cast of the popular ABC television sitcom “Taxi”, to play Simka Dahblitz-Gravas, wife of Latka Gravas played by Andy Kaufman. The role shot Kane to stardom, bringing her two Emmy Awards, and considerably adding to her wealth too. She remained on the show until its cancellation in 1983.

The actress remained active on both the big and small screen throughout the rest of the decade, appearing in films such as “The Secret Diary of Sigmund Freud”, “Over the Brooklyn Bridge” and “Licence to Drive”. She also made appearances in a number of television series and TV films, and had a recurring role in the series “All is Forgiven”. All contributed to her net worth.

The ’90s saw Kane starring in films such as “The Lemon Sisters” and “Flashback”, while also landing many other film roles. She was involved in various television projects as well, such as landing recurring roles in the series “American Dreamer”, “Brooklyn Bridge” and “Pearl”. She also did an extensive voice-over work, such as providing her voice for the films “Napoleon” and “Theodore Rex”. Her wealth grew larger.

Kane’s film work of the early 2000s included starring roles in “My First Mister” and “Cosmopolitan”. She made numerous television appearances during this time too, such as in the series “Family Guy”, “Hope & Faith”, “Monk” and “Two and a Half Men”, further increasing her net worth.

From 2005 to 2014 Kane starred as Madame Morrible, the evil headmistress in the Broadway musical “Wicked”, in regional productions too, reinforcing her status of a star and expanding her fortune. Speaking further of her stage work, she starred in the off-Broadway play “Love, Loss, and What I Wore” in 2010, and The following year made her West End debut in a revival of Lillian Hellman’s drama “The Children’s Hour”. The year 2012 saw her in a Broadway revival of the play “Harvey”, with Kane’s involvement in all these projects significantly improving her net worth.

Her most recent work includes a leading part in the 2015 crime thriller film “Addiction: A 60’s Love Story”. As for the small screen, she played Gertrude Kapelput in the series “Gotham” from 2014 to 2016. Since 2015, she portrays Lillian Kaushtupper in the Netflix sitcom “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”.

When speaking about her personal life, Kane has never been married. As there have been no reports regarding her relationship status, sources believe she is single at present.

1I don't put together cars, I put together people. It makes me happy to construct these people, to build another world. I feel happy and free and very consumed. [her reasons why she doesn't want to quit acting for another job]
2Jack prefers the actresses with whom he works to be on the short side. I wasn't tall, so I was immediately in. The reason for this is that he is no more than five foot seven or so himself. When he has no other choice but to play opposite a lanky actress, he will wear elevator shoes. [on working with Jack Nicholson]
