Sir Nigel John Dermot “Sam” Neill is a New Zealand actor who was born on September 14, 1947, in Omagh, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. Neill’s parents are Priscilla Beatrice and Dermot Neill. His father was a second-generation New Zealander who was an army officer, and his mother was English.
When Neill was born, his father was stationed in Northern Ireland, where he was serving with the Royal Irish Fusiliers. The family that once controlled Neill and Co. is now a part of Wilson Neill, a publicly traded hospitality company. Neill claims to be a New Zealand native.
In his 53-year career, Neill has acted in both dramas and big-budget films. He is known as a “international leading man” and is regarded as one of the most flexible performers of his generation.
Neill and his family moved to Christchurch, New Zealand, in 1954, where he attended Christ’s College, an Anglican boys’ boarding school. He went on to study English literature at the University of Canterbury, where he was introduced to acting for the first time. He relocated to Wellington to further his education at Victoria University, where he earned a BA in English literature.
In 1981, he played Damien Thorn, the devil’s son, in Omen III: The Final Conflict, and the following year, he performed an exceptionally prominent role in Andrzej Uawski’s horror picture Possession.
