In September 1987, Garland and his wife Lynn were wed at the Harvard Club in Manhattan. Samuel Irving Rosenman, the grandfather of Lynn Rosenman Garland, served as a judge on the trial-level New York Supreme Court as well as a special advisor to Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman.

Rebecca and Jessica, the couple’s two daughters, both earned degrees from Yale University.

Before Biden was elected and Garland was appointed, Justice Elena Kagan chose Jessica Garland, a 2019 Yale legal School graduate, as one of her legal clerks in early July 2020 to work as a law clerk in 2022–2023.
